Voice is a self-advocacy group in Wrexham with whom we have been working together with for two years, in conjunction with Reach, Asist, Staffordshire. They have supported a number of people with a learning disability and worked alongside an animation facilitator to develop an animated film around loss, entitled ‘Loved and Lost’ This is a delightful short film that is very powerful and illustrates well the impact of loss and the experiences of people with a learning disability experiencing many losses, including the loss of a pet. The animation makes the film quite unique and different, and as medium works well in this context. Voice have kindly given us permission to have access to the film on our website to maximise the potential for its usage.
This was the one of the outcomes of a collaborative research project between Keele University and Cardiff University (Todd & Read, 2010). The aim of this qualitative research study was to explore the understandings that people with a learning disability had around loss, dying and death. The primary outcomes of this research were depicted in this film and translated into short vignettes, portrayed by actors with a learning disability.
